Visit the biggest dragon in the world
In 1908, range of combat unit of Dutch troops reported that they saw a dragon like a monster in an island to the south of East Nusa Tenggara Province. Lieutenant Steyn van Hens Broek, serving as administrator of Dutch colonial upon hearing the news intended to prove what was said. He then prepared Flores base-camp combat unit of Dutch ship fleet heading for the Island.
Lieutenant Steyn and his troops, when arrived at the island, saw an animal of giant lizard-like of two meter long. Steyn killed one of them and brought it to his headquarter at Ende city. The giant lizard was taken the picture and the picture was sent to Museum and Botanical Garden in Bogor for further research.
This is the first documentation of giant lizard called Komodo, thus, in 1910 Dutch government named the island as Komodo Island.
Komodo is wild reptile, terrific and amazing as well. Three hundred years ago, nature lets this reptile remain alive through wild nature selection. Now this reptile is no longer a myth as terrifying dragon.
In Komodo Island you can see komodo’s original habitat amidst their low population of about thousands komodo only left. Visiting komodo in their habitat is a challenging trip and of course fascinating. Enjoying traveling to this island is quite costing.
From Kupang, the capital city of NTT province, visitors travels to Ende, a city near Flores Island by plane. From Ende, the trip takes ten hours by minibus to Labuhanbajo city.
From this city situated to the west of Flores Island the trip is continued toward Komodo Island by speed boat for about two hours. Speed boat fare is one million rupiah for vise versa trip.
Visitor can visit the island also by wooded-boat with lower cost, but takes longer time. Entry ticket to the region is not so expensive. Overseas tourists will pay US15 dollar and locals are charged Rp.75 thousand per person for three days visit.
Komodo Island also has various plants like Sepang tree (tree the wood of which produces red dye) used by the locals for medicine and clothes dye material, other is Nitak tree or sterculia oblongata. This tree is also believed as a medicine and the seed is edible by local community, the taste is good and delicious like legume boiled peanut.
In this Island visitors are free to see directly komodo as the biggest lizard species in the world with average 3.13 meter long and 165 kg weigh hanging around freely. However, we must remain aware of it for Komodo is cannibal animal and carnivore.
In addition, visitor can also see these animal activities like breeding of komodo taken place between May to August, komodo partaking deer, goat, pig and see komodo sunbathing in open area and in trees in the morning.
In this Island, komodo lives and proliferate well. And the most terrific threat is human being for human usually hunts deer and wild boar, as the favorite food of this reptile. Now, in this island is found at least one thousand two hundred komodos, plus komodo from other island, Rinca Island, so that total komodo in these islands is about 2500 komodos.
